Fred Gunter opened Exkursion in 1974; he was a backpacker who needed good gear and couldn't find it so he started his own shop.  As his interests expanded, so did the shop.  Now we offer the Pittsburgh area the finest selection of rock climbing, backpacking, mountaineering, cross-country skiing, and kayaking gear available.  We also teach classes in rock climbing and kayaking suited for beginners and experts alike.  A lot has changed in the last 30 some years.  Gear has changed.  The industry has changed.  Some things haven't changed.  Fred still loves to climb and paddle and teach.  Our staff is just as passionate about the outdoors and helping get folks the right gear as it has ever been.  Thanks for checking us out and we look forward to helping you enjoy the outdoors.
